| Here's a gorgeous Rose of Sharon appliqué quilt from Lancaster County, PA. Labeled with the name Bachman on the back, it measures a large 96 inches square and dates from c. 1870.
The Rose of Sharon motif is appliquéd in four blocks, with an additional rose centered among them, using solid red, green and double pink fabric. The background fabric is a tan on white calico print.
The central field is surrounded with a green sawtooth border.
The back is a brown and red print fabric, and the separate binding is done in solid green.
Quilting motifs are numerous and complex, with feathered wreath and floral forms augmenting grid and outline quilting of the appliqués, and a meandering feathered vine with sunflowers in the wide border, all at 7 - 9 stitches per inch.
The quilt is in excellent condition, unwashed, with only one or two unobtrusive age spots, which are hardly noticeable.
Red and green appliqué quilts are seldom found using a printed fabric for a background; this one adds a subtle warmth to the overall feeling.
