| A circa 1920's redwork quilt from the Oley valley of Berks County Pennsylvania. Measures about 82 inches square, in excellent, unused condition.
The quilt is constructed in 16 blocks of redwork embroidered animal and floral motifs. Blocks measure about 16 inches square.
Signed in embroidery by the maker, Ruth Gruber, in one block.
The embroidery is extraordinarily well done, with a great realism. The maker must have liked collies, as that is the only pattern repeated, in both top corners.
Quilted in a Roman block pattern, with a cable pattern in the outer border, at 6-7 stiches per inch. Light pencil guidelines are visible.
The separate red binding is hand stitched to the scalloped edge.
There are a few very light age spots, and a slight variation in color of the white, which would disappear with the first laundering of this quilt.
