Early wholecloth quilt of American blue resist indigo dyed fabric. Fabric c. 1760; quilt c. 1800

Purchased from a Bethlehem, PA estate of a family with some upper New York state ancestry.

Pieced together from what were probably 18th century bed hangings of the type found in the upper Hudson River valley of New York.
Lighter and darker areas were printed by removing some of the resist after successive dye baths.
Close-up shows applied binding which was probably originally the trim from the bed hangings.
Clamshell quilting in the borders with a grid in center.
Close-up of homespun back and binding.
A patched hole.
