An early wholecloth chintz quilt from Chester County, Pa., ca. 1830 Measuring about 74 x 76 inches, in excellent condition.

Price: $975

The floral and leaf pattern is printed in shades of brown, with ethereal, perhaps fugitive green used in the leaves. The same fabric is used for both sides.
Unusually, for a brown-based chintz, the fabric is strong and shows little wear or loss of glaze. Only very minor splitting in the self-binding.
Quilted in a 3 inch diagonal grid at about 5 stitches per inch. Believed to be a wool batting.
Close up reveals the background area is done in picotage, or tiny dots.
